The Unifier Project, a grassroots civic engagement and coordination initiative operating across the 44 Local Government Areas of Kano State, has formally challenged the evidentiary basis, investigative methodology, and overall conclusions contained in Amnesty International’s recent claims regarding the May 5, 2026 incident in Kano.
In a statement released from its Kano State Secretariat, the organisation expressed concern over what it described as a growing tendency to prioritise rapidly circulating digital narratives above detailed, community-based, and forensically grounded investigations required for credible human rights reporting.

The group stressed that its position should not be interpreted as political partisanship or institutional defensiveness, but rather as a principled demand for fairness, due process, and adherence to rigorous investigative standards.
According to the statement, the organisation believes the claims made about the May 5 incident relied heavily on fragmented viral content and speculative interpretations instead of independently verified and contextually grounded evidence.
The Unifier Project argued that local security agencies, community stakeholders, and civil society organisations familiar with the affected communities had identified longstanding criminal rivalries, territorial disputes, and inter-group conflicts as key factors behind the incident. It maintained that such dynamics predate the current administration and are deeply rooted in the socio-geographic realities of the communities involved.
The organisation said any credible investigation must adequately consider these local realities before attributing political motives or alleging institutional complicity.
“To assign political causation to events whose most documented explanation remains criminal confrontation, without clear forensic evidence linking political authorities to the alleged conduct, risks replacing investigative integrity with analytical convenience,” the statement noted.
The group also referenced several policy initiatives of the Kano State Government, particularly the Safe Corridor Initiative, which focuses on rehabilitation, vocational empowerment, and social reintegration of vulnerable youths previously linked to street violence and organised crime.
According to the organisation, it would be inconsistent to accuse an administration that has invested substantial public resources in peacebuilding and youth rehabilitation programmes of simultaneously sponsoring instability, without compelling forensic proof.
The statement further highlighted broader governance and development efforts by the state government, including the implementation of a N1.477 trillion 2026 budget, with 68 per cent allocated to capital projects in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and social protection
It also cited investments exceeding N800 million in youth empowerment programmes benefiting more than 5,300 youths, alongside the disbursement of over N334 million to 6,680 women entrepreneurs across all 44 local government areas.
The deployment of 2,000 trained Neighbourhood Watch operatives was also presented as evidence of a community-based security strategy aimed at reducing violence and improving grassroots cooperation between civilians and security agencies.
“These are documented and verifiable institutional actions that must form part of any fair assessment of the administration’s relationship with security and stability,” the statement added.
Addressing broader concerns about international human rights investigations, the Unifier Project outlined what it described as essential standards for responsible reporting on incidents of this nature. These include independently verifiable forensic evidence, credible intelligence from accountable security institutions, deep understanding of local criminal and territorial dynamics, and direct engagement with community leaders, traditional institutions, civil society groups, and relevant law enforcement agencies.
The organisation warned that reports lacking such standards risk becoming instruments of narrative construction rather than objective accountability.
It further argued that the credibility of global human rights organisations depends on consistency, fairness, and methodological balance across different regions and political contexts.
According to the statement, perceptions of selective activism or inconsistent evidentiary standards could weaken public trust in international advocacy institutions and undermine the culture of accountability they seek to promote.
The Unifier Project maintained that Kano State is currently undergoing measurable social and economic transformation through urban renewal programmes, governance reforms, public sector modernisation, and community stabilisation efforts.
Drawing on its operational presence across the state, the organisation said it has directly observed improvements in the lives of ordinary citizens and insisted that Kano should be assessed on the basis of verifiable outcomes rather than allegations it described as “forensically unsubstantiated and contextually inadequate.”
The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to civic accountability, community peace, and democratic due process, while urging Amnesty International to adopt a more collaborative and locally informed approach in future investigations.
It called for greater engagement with traditional institutions, community stakeholders, security agencies, and civil society actors possessing direct knowledge of local realities before issuing conclusions with potentially far-reaching reputational and political consequences.
“The gravity of such allegations demands only one standard — independently verified, contextually grounded, and forensically corroborated evidence,” the statement concluded.
