A viral video showing the indiscriminate felling of trees within the premises of Abubakar Rimi Television (ARTV) has triggered an official intervention by the Kano State Government, exposing what appears to be a broader crisis of infrastructure decay, inadequate digitization and operational inefficiency at the state-owned television station.
During an unscheduled visit to ARTV, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, ordered an immediate halt to the cutting of trees within the station’s premises, describing the action as contrary to the environmental and climate hange policies of the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
The commissioner directed that no tree should henceforth be felled without official approval and consultation with relevant government agencies, stressing that the depletion of natural resources poses serious environmental consequences.
Beyond the environmental concerns, the visit laid bare the mounting challenges confronting the once prominent broadcast station.
Comrade Waiya disclosed that findings available to the ministry indicate that ARTV has fallen short of viewers’ expectations due to stale programme content, poor-quality news production and its inability to keep pace with the rapidly evolving digital broadcasting landscape.
According to him, while modern television stations now provide real time audience engagement and on demand viewing options, ARTV remains largely conservative in its operations, making it increasingly difficult to compete with contemporary broadcasters across the country.
“The present situation is inconsistent with the vision of the Abba Kabir Yusuf administration, which prioritizes innovation, digitization and modern operational practices across all sectors,” the commissioner stated.
He challenged the station’s management to make more strategic use of budgetary allocations by prioritizing staff development, technological innovation and institutional reforms capable of restoring the station’s relevance.
In a move that signals government concern over the station’s condition, Waiya disclosed that he would submit a special report to Governor Yusuf seeking intervention and support for a comprehensive digital transformation programme aimed at repositioning ARTV.The commissioner also emphasized the need for greater transparency, accountability and effective personnel management in the organization.
Speaking during the visit, ARTV Deputy Managing Director, Malam Idris Abba Musa, admitted that the station is battling a range of operational setbacks, including bureaucratic bottlenecks, inadequate staff training and insufficient digitization of its facilities.
