The Acting Chairman of the Kano State Sports Commission, Dr. Murtala Musa, has described sports as an effective tool for curtailing drug abuse among youths. He made this declaration during a courtesy visit to the Kano State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), where he emphasised the need for strategic collaboration between the two organisations to sensitise young people on the dangers of drug abuse.
According to Dr. Musa, the visit was aimed at strengthening partnership efforts towards promoting a drug-free society through sports and youth engagement programmes. He disclosed that the Commission is set to reintroduce the Inter-Local Government Sports Competition, a flagship initiative spanning all 44 Local Government Areas of Kano State, which will serve as a platform for educating youths on the harmful effects of illicit drugs.
The Acting Chairman commended the leadership of the NDLEA Kano State Command for the warm reception accorded to his delegation and called on youths to embrace sports as a pathway to wealth creation, self-development, and positive social engagement. He noted that sports continue to provide opportunities for young Nigerians to excel and become responsible, productive members of society.
Commander of the NDLEA, Dahiru Lawan Yahya, noted that the agency’s mandate is anchored on some certain pillars- the arrest and prosecution of offenders; preventive education and advocacy; and youth empowerment and community engagement. He welcomed the Sports Commission’s initiative and assured the agency’s full readiness to collaborate in the sustained fight against drug abuse. He further urged youths across the state to shun illicit substances and channel their energies into productive pursuits that contribute to personal growth and societal advancement.
The visit underscores the commitment of both organisations to championing healthy lifestyles, youth development, and a drug-free Kano State through sustained collaboration, institutional synergy, and public enlightenment campaigns.
