The Labour Party has postponed its scheduled ward, local government, and state congresses, as well as its national convention, in a strategic move aimed at strengthening internal processes and expanding membership participation.
The exercise, which was initially set to begin on March 26, 2026, has now been put on hold following a high-level stakeholders’ meeting involving the party’s Interim National Working Committee (NWC) and key labour union representatives.
Party insiders say the decision is driven by the need to allow more Nigerians to take part in the ongoing membership re-registration exercise, seen as critical to the party’s grassroots consolidation ahead of future political contests.
Under the earlier timetable, ward congresses were to hold on March 26, followed by local government congresses on March 28, state congresses on March 31, and a national convention on April 11.
In a parallel move, the party leadership has inaugurated a 45-member Congresses and Convention Committee to oversee the rescheduled process. The committee is chaired by Ginger Onwusibe, a member of the House of Representatives.
Other notable members include Obinna Aguocha, Amaobi Ogah, Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, Benedict Etanabene, and labour leader Lawson Osagie, among others.
Inaugurating the committee, the party’s Interim National Chairman, Nenadi Usman, charged members to uphold transparency, diligence, and neutrality in discharging their duties. She emphasized that the postponement provides a critical window to address logistical gaps and ensure a credible and hitch-free exercise.
The party also called for understanding from stakeholders, including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), assuring that a revised timetable will be announced soon.
Political observers interpret the move as a recalibration effort by the party to solidify its internal structure and broaden its support base amid Nigeria’s evolving political landscape
