Kano to End Livestock Price Haggling, Introduce Weighing System — Commissioner

The Kano State Government has announced plans to phase out the traditional price-bargaining system in livestock markets and replace it with a standardised weighing system to promote fairness, transparency, and food safety.
The Honourable Commissioner for Livestock Development, Dr. Aliyu Isah Aliyu, disclosed this while receiving the leadership of the Kano State Livestock Traders and Meat Processing Union on a courtesy visit at his office.
Dr. Aliyu explained that under the proposed system, animals will be weighed before sale, with prices agreed upon by the government and relevant stakeholders. He said the reform is aimed at protecting both buyers and sellers while modernising livestock business practices across the state.
The Commissioner also reiterated the state government’s firm stance on public health and animal welfare, stressing that the slaughter of pregnant animals and the sale of meat from animals that died before slaughter remain strictly prohibited.
According to him, such practices are illegal, dangerous, and pose serious health risks to consumers, adding that the government will continue to enforce existing laws to safeguard public health.
Dr. Aliyu noted that the reforms are part of the broader development agenda of the Kano State Government under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who established the Ministry of Livestock Development to strengthen food safety, livelihoods, and the overall well-being of residents.
He assured the union of sustained collaboration, continuous stakeholder engagement, and government support for the adoption of modern, safe, and responsible livestock practices in Kano State.
