The Kano State Government has deployed 550 students drawn from nine tertiary institutions to support the expansion of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, in a move aimed at strengthening democratic participation across the state.
The Chairman of the Kano State Task Force on Voter Registration Mobilisation, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, disclosed this during the official launch of the initiative at Kofar Mata Stadium, one of the major centres for the ongoing voter registration exercise.
This was contained in a statement issued by Abbas Ibrahim, Chairman of the Publicity Committee, on behalf of the Kano State Task Force on Mobilisation of Voter Registration.
According to Mr Waiya, the students have been trained to assist with online pre-registration processes, a strategy designed to reduce congestion at registration centres and speed up the overall exercise, particularly for students and other residents who face difficulties accessing registration points.
He explained that 100 of the students were drawn from Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, while the remaining eight institutions contributed 50 students each.
Mr Waiya, who also serves as the State Commissioner for Information, stressed that voter registration is a fundamental civic responsibility that plays a critical role in sustaining a vibrant democracy.
“This is an opportunity for young people to contribute meaningfully to democratic development. Your dedication and integrity will help ensure inclusive representation in governance,” he said.
He urged the students to carry out their duties with honesty, discipline, and strict adherence to established guidelines, warning against any actions that could compromise the credibility of the exercise.
The chairman also announced that outstanding participants would be recognised and rewarded, as part of efforts to encourage excellence and accountability.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) played a key role in training the students on both technical procedures and ethical standards related to voter registration.
Heads of the participating institutions were also present at the launch to observe proceedings, reflecting strong institutional support for the initiative and underscoring the importance of youth involvement in democratic processes.
Some of the selected students expressed readiness to work diligently to ensure the success of the programme, reaffirming their commitment to increasing voter registration across Kano State.
