The Kano State House of Assembly on Thursday witnessed a massive turnout of supporters, political associates, and party faithful as the Deputy Governor-designate, Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo, appeared before the House screening committee ahead of his confirmation.
The 12-member committee, chaired by the Deputy Speaker, Alhaji Muhammad Bello Butu-Butu, who also represents Rimin Gado Constituency, is expected to submit its report to the Assembly on Monday for final consideration and confirmation.
Garo’s screening was widely seen as a mere constitutional formality, with political observers confident that his confirmation is all but assured.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf had earlier forwarded Garo’s name to the Assembly following the voluntary resignation of the immediate past Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, thereby creating a vacancy in the office.
The Assembly complex was thrown into a frenzy as Garo arrived at about 2:30 p.m. to a rousing reception from a mammoth crowd of party supporters, family members, friends, and well-wishers, many of whom had waited for hours to catch a glimpse of the nominee.
The enthusiastic reception underscored Garo’s political relevance and the widespread support he continues to enjoy across Kano State and beyond.
Among the dignitaries who accompanied him were members of the National Assembly representing Bichi, Gwarzo/Kabo, Kunchi/Tsanyawa, Dambatta/Makoda, Kano Municipal, Tudun Wada/Doguwa, and Karaye/Rogo federal constituencies.
Also in attendance were Senator Suleiman Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila, representing Kano South Senatorial District, and the Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory, Dr Mariya Mahmoud Bunkure.
Other notable personalities included former ALGON chairmen such as Dr Lamin Sani Kawaji, Ibrahim Ahmad Karaye, and Baffa Takai, alongside several former local government chairmen and prominent APC leaders from across the state.
Speaking with journalists shortly after the screening exercise, Garo expressed profound gratitude to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and APC stakeholders for the confidence reposed in him.
He pledged to remain committed to the Kano First Agenda and to prioritise the collective interest of the state above all else.
“I will work tirelessly to justify the confidence placed in me and to ensure that Kano State continues on the path of progress and development,” he said.
Garo also appealed to residents of the state to offer him constructive advice and support to enable him to discharge his responsibilities effectively.
Before his nomination, Garo had built an impressive political career, having served as APC Organising Secretary, Special Adviser, Executive Chairman of Kabo Local Government, Kano State ALGON Chairman, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and the APC Deputy Governorship Candidate in the 2023 general elections.
