Residents of Danmusa Local Government Area in Katsina State have received a major boost in access to water and livestock services following the commissioning of key projects funded by the European Union.
The projects, implemented by Mercy Corps under the European Union’s Conflict Prevention, Crisis Response and Resilience (CPCRR) programme, include the construction of a solar-powered borehole and the rehabilitation and upgrading of a veterinary clinic in the area.
The intervention was carried out in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD).
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Mercy Corps Representative, Mr. Philip Ikita, said the initiative was designed to enhance livelihoods, promote peacebuilding and strengthen resilience among communities affected by insecurity.
According to him, the intervention will improve access to essential services, strengthen livelihoods and contribute to sustaining peace in the area. He added that the improving security situation in parts of the state made it possible for Mercy Corps and its partners to successfully implement the projects.
Earlier, the State Commissioner for Livestock and Animal Husbandry, Ahmed Mohammed Bakori, commended Mercy Corps and its partners for their commitment to restoring stability in previously troubled local government areas of the state.
Bakori noted that the projects would significantly improve livestock services and provide much-needed support to pastoralists and farmers in Danmusa and surrounding communities.
Also speaking, the representative of the District Head of Danmusa, Ahmed Ahmadu Abubakar, pledged the community’s commitment to safeguarding the facilities and ensuring proper maintenance to guarantee their sustainability.
The intervention is expected to improve access to clean water, strengthen animal healthcare services and foster peaceful coexistence among residents of the area.
