A civil society organization in Gombe State has asked Nigeria’s top anti-graft agencies to open a formal probe into former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, over reports linking him to multiple high-value properties in Abuja.
The group, Concerned Gombe Citizens, made the call on Monday in a statement signed by its convener, Ibrahim Ilyas Kaltungo. It specifically urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission to act on public discussions surrounding the alleged acquisitions.
At the center of the allegations are claims that the former minister acquired expensive residential properties in the Wuse area of the Federal Capital Territory. The group said the reports have generated wide public debate and deserve official scrutiny.
Concerned Gombe Citizens stressed that the allegations remain unproven at this stage. However, it argued that the nature of the claims and the public interest involved make it necessary for the EFCC and ICPC to step in early.
The statement described public office as a sacred trust. It said officials who manage public resources must be ready to account for their assets and financial dealings whenever questions are raised by citizens and the media.
The group added that where there are concerns about unexplained wealth or assets that appear disproportionate to legitimate earnings, the appropriate authorities have a duty to establish the facts through lawful investigations.
To that end, it listed four key requests. First, it wants a comprehensive investigation into allegations regarding the acquisition of luxury properties linked to Dr. Pantami.
Second, it asked the agencies to determine whether the properties were lawfully acquired and whether the process complied with Nigeria’s anti-corruption, public procurement, and asset declaration laws.
Third, the group called for a review of all relevant financial records, property ownership documents, and sources of funding connected to the alleged acquisitions.
Fourth, it demanded that the findings of any investigation be made public. According to the group, transparency in the outcome will help build public confidence in the fight against corruption.
Concerned Gombe Citizens warned that selective justice weakens democratic institutions. It said Nigeria’s anti-corruption agencies must demonstrate that no individual is above the law, regardless of previous office, political affiliation, or public influence.
The group said if any violations of the law are established, appropriate legal action should be taken without fear or favor. It maintained that impartial investigations strengthen accountability and reinforce trust in government.
Closing its statement, the group reaffirmed its commitment to promoting transparency, good governance, and the responsible management of public resources. It urged the EFCC and ICPC to treat the allegations with the seriousness they deserve and to carry out an independent investigation in line with the Constitution and all applicable laws.
