An Upper Sharia Court sitting in Shahuci, Kano State, has sentenced a young man to prison and flogging after finding him guilty of assaulting another resident and causing him serious injury.
The court, presided over by Judge Abdu Abdullahi Wayyah, convicted Hassan Abba, a resident of Durumin Iya–Lokon Maraba, for beating Ibrahim Haruna during an altercation, which resulted in a fracture.
The incident occurred in Durumin Iya area of Kano, where the convict was said to be among youths involved in the practice known as “sukuwa da doki,” a horse-riding display often performed behind the Emir’s Palace Kano despite a ban by authorities due to security concerns.
Delivering judgment on March 16, 2026, the court sentenced the defendant to three months in prison or a fine of N30,000.
In addition, the court ordered a non-custodial sentence requiring him to clean the premises of the mosque at the Emir’s Palace for one month.
The judge also directed the convict to pay N293,350 as medical expenses to the victim, Ibrahim Haruna, to cover the cost of treatment.
Furthermore, the court ordered that the defendant receive 12 strokes of the cane.
The court said the ruling was meant to serve as a warning to youths involved in violence and banned activities in the community.
