In a strategic move towards promoting inclusive governance and sustainable development, the Special Adviser to the Kano State Governor on Mobilization Hajiya Bilkisu Yakubu Indabo is set to launch the Government–NGO Handshake, a partnership initiative designed to strengthen collaboration between government institutions and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in advancing development across the state.
The programme, is expected to create a platform through which government and civil society organizations will work together to improve public awareness, transparency, accountability and community participation in development programmes.
The initiative comes at a time when governments around the world increasingly recognize the vital role of civil society in ensuring that development projects respond to the needs and aspirations of the people. According to the Special Adviser
under the proposed partnership, NGOs will complement government efforts by providing public education, advocacy, community mobilization and feedback mechanisms that will help ensure development projects reach every segment of society, particularly women, youth, persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups.
Hajiya Bilkisu Indabo says the Government–NGO Handshake will also promote regular engagement between public institutions and civil society organizations, enabling citizens to better understand government policies, programmes and ongoing development projects. By making accurate and timely information more accessible, the initiative seeks to enhance transparency and strengthen public confidence in governance.
Another key objective is to encourage communities to actively participate in the planning, implementation and monitoring of development projects. “Such participation is expected to improve project ownership, ensure better service delivery and promote accountability at all levels.” Hajiya Bilkisu explained.
The initiative as she puts it, further aims to establish a structured system for gathering feedback from communities, allowing government agencies to identify implementation challenges, respond to citizens’ concerns and improve future policies and programmes through evidence based decision making.
Development experts have consistently argued that sustainable progress is best achieved when governments, civil society organizations, traditional institutions, development partners and local communities work together toward common goals. The Kano Government–NGO Handshake is expected to institutionalize this collaborative approach.
The programme will also strengthen the capacity of NGOs to serve as effective partners in public education, advocacy and community mobilization while creating opportunities for joint monitoring and evaluation of government projects to enhance efficiency, transparency and impact.
By fostering stronger partnerships and leveraging the comparative strengths of both government institutions and civil society organizations, the initiative is expected to improve access to information, expand citizen participation and ensure that development interventions produce measurable benefits for communities across Kano State.
Stakeholders believe that the Government–NGO Handshake represents more than a partnership; it is a commitment to building an informed, engaged and empowered citizenry capable of contributing meaningfully to Kano State’s development agenda.
“A date will soon be announced for the official launch of the initiative” the Special Adviser revealed.
