In a move aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s agricultural value chain and improving food security, BH Startup General Enterprise has entered into a strategic partnership with FasterCapital under its Equity Pilot Program.
The collaboration, which commenced in December 2025 in Kano, will support the scale-up of BH Startup’s stone-free rice processing operations and expand the distribution of its flagship product, BH Local Gold Rice, across northern and north-central Nigeria.
By combining FasterCapital’s global startup acceleration expertise with BH Startup’s locally rooted processing model, the partnership seeks to address persistent gaps in rice quality, supply chain efficiency, and market access.
Addressing Nigeria’s Rice Supply Gap
Nigeria consumes over 7 million metric tons of rice annually, but domestic production meets only about 60 percent of demand, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture.
Challenges such as inconsistent post-harvest processing, poor quality control, and the prevalence of stone-contaminated rice have created a major gap in the market.
With rising food inflation and increasing demand from households and institutional buyers—including schools, caterers, and religious centres—there is growing need for affordable, hygienic, and high-quality locally processed rice across states such as Kano, Kaduna, Jigawa, and Katsina.
Local Solution with Farmer Linkages
BH Startup General Enterprise is tackling these challenges through an integrated model that combines:
Direct sourcing from smallholder farmers
Modern rice processing and destoning
Hygienic packaging in multiple sizes (1kg–50kg)
Strong quality assurance systems
Its product, BH Local Gold Rice, is positioned as a stone-free, consistently graded, and securely packaged alternative to both informal mill products and imported brands.
The company projects annual sales of ₦28.5 million, with an initial monthly processing capacity of 5,000kg, and plans for rapid scale-up.
FasterCapital’s Strategic Support
Under the Equity Pilot Program, FasterCapital will provide:
Product and quality improvement advisory
Digital marketing and go-to-market support
Operational optimization
Investor access and fundraising guidance
The partnership also includes preparation for a seed funding round within 9–12 months, alongside export readiness assessment for regional markets.
Executive Perspectives
Investor and advisor at FasterCapital, Hesham Zreik, noted that the initiative aligns with efforts to strengthen agricultural value chains:
“Harnessing local agri-value chains to deliver hygienic and affordable staples is exactly the kind of impact-driven scaling our Equity Pilot Program targets. BH Startup combines strong local insight with an operational model that supports food security in Nigeria.”
Founder and CEO of BH Startup General Enterprise, Baffa Hamza Ali, said the partnership would accelerate growth and impact:
“Partnering with FasterCapital fast-tracks our ability to increase processing capacity and reach more families and institutions with high-quality, stone-free rice. This collaboration brings technical, market, and funding support that will boost job creation, farmer incomes, and access to affordable food.”
Growth Plans and Expansion
In the near term, BH Startup plans to:
Increase processing capacity to 10,000kg monthly
Formalize supply agreements with over 50 farmer groups
Launch subscription-based distribution for households and institutions
Long-term plans include machinery upgrades, logistics expansion, product diversification (including parboiled and brown rice), and export feasibility studies.
