Hajiya Dr. Salamatu Garba stands as one of Nigeria’s most respected voices in social justice, rural development, and agricultural transformation.
As the founder of the Women Farmers Advancement Network (WOFAN), she has dedicated her life to empowering women and youth, particularly in Northern Nigeria, turning vulnerability into strength and poverty into productivity.
Her journey is rooted in academic excellence and a deep commitment to community service.
She earned a Master’s degree in Plant Pathology from Ahmadu Bello University, where she developed strong expertise in agricultural science and crop protection.
This scientific foundation would later shape her practical approach to solving rural farming challenges.
Driven by a passion for inclusive development, she proceeded to obtain a PhD in Gender and Development from University of Wolverhampton.
Her research focused on bridging inequality gaps and promoting women’s participation in economic and social leadership.
Her academic pursuit extended into peacebuilding and conflict resolution with a PhD in Sociology of Peace from the United Nations Institute of Peace and Conflict Resolution.
She also enhanced her leadership capacity through executive programs at Harvard University, equipping herself with global perspectives on Governance , strategy, and sustainable Growth.
Before venturing fully into development work, Dr. Garba spent fifteen years shaping minds as a lecturer at Ahmadu Bello University and Bayero University, Kano.
Her academic career was marked by mentorship, research contributions, and the nurturing of future leaders in agriculture and social sciences.
In June 1993, she established WOFAN with a bold vision to address rural poverty through structured agricultural empowerment.
She recognized that women farmers lacked access to finance, training, and market opportunities, and she set out to provide practical solutions that would create lasting economic independence.
Under her leadership, WOFAN introduced community-based cooperatives, microfinance support systems, agribusiness training, and value-chain development strategies.
These initiatives transformed subsistence farming into profitable enterprise models, enabling thousands of women and youth to build sustainable livelihoods.
Today, WOFAN has supported more than 50,000 women- and youth-led agribusinesses, turning agriculture into a viable business pathway rather than a survival activity.
The organization continues to promote climate-smart agriculture, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship development.
Dr. Garba’s leadership style is defined by compassion, strategy, and results-driven action.
She believes that empowerment must combine education, access to capital, and continuous mentorship to achieve meaningful transformation.
Her contributions extend beyond WOFAN. She currently serves as the Executive Board Chair of WOFAN International Group, guiding its expansion and strengthening partnerships across sectors.
Recently, she was inaugurated as Chair of the Sectoral Industry Advisory Board for the Centre for Dryland Agriculture at Bayero University, Kano.
In this role, she promotes collaboration between academia and industry to enhance research impact and agricultural innovation.
Her work has attracted global recognition.
In 2025, she was honored at the Qatar Leadership Summit for her exceptional leadership and dedication to social advancement.
She is also a recipient of the Value4Her Award, acknowledging her outstanding efforts in advancing women in agribusiness across Africa.
Nationally, she has been celebrated as a UN Ambassador of Peace and honored by the Nigeria Leadership Initiative for value-based leadership.
In 2024, the Crop Science Society of Nigeria recognized her contributions to human development and agricultural progress.
